Outreach

A young black woman and young white woman sit behind a table smiling with meteorites, flyers, and stickers at an event table..

Are you interested in bring pieces of the universe out to you? Want to have an expert talk for your students or group? Want to hold a rock that fell from space? We can help!

When our schedule allows, either our staff or volunteers can come to you with hands-on activities and presentations. We often attend school science nights and community events.

A table with an Abrams Planetarium tablecloth. Meteorites, flyers, and stickers are on the table and two gravity simulators with stretched fabric and marbles sit in front on the floor

We are happy to work with you to customize activities we can bring out to match your theme and events. But here are some our  more common activities we have ready.

Activities
Name Description

Meteorites

We have a set of meteorites that we can bring out to your event so you can touch a piece of the asteroid belt, hug the moon, or see the fascinating things that happen to rocks as they fall from space.
Gravity Simulator Using stretch fabric and marbles of different masses, we can recreate the effects of gravity to understand why planets orbit and black holes merge.
Solar Observing If you have a daytime event and its clear outside, we can bring our special solar telescopes that allows us to safely view the sun, see sunspots, and maybe catch a solar flare in action.
Telescopes For evening events with clear skies, we can bring a telescope and point it at planets, the moon, star clusters and more! In the case of inclement weather, we can sometimes point to objects inside to see how powerful telescopes can be.
Cloud in a Bottle Clouds might be annoying when you want to stargaze, but we can learn all about how they form and dissipate with our cloud in a bottle activities that instantly create clouds.
Comet Ever wonder what a comet looks like up close? Well, we have a recipe for that! In this demo we put the ingredients together for a comet and watch as it solidifies and start releasing a tail. This one is messy though! So be sure you have a good spot that is easy to clean.

Please email us at abrams@msu.edu with information for your event and if you have a preference for which activities.
